Fake Abstract (Blue on Bouguereau)

2019

Oil on linen

59 x 47 inches

“Fake Abstract (Blue on Bouguereau),” created by Lino Lago is part of COPE NYC's exhibition, "Blue," the first curated exhibition in 630 Flushing's South Lobby Gallery curated by Vida Sabbaghi.

Lino Lago’s intersection of iconic subjects from classical master paintings with splashes of color, accentuates blue in his Fake Abstract (Blue on Bouguereau). The blue partially concealing a vaguely familiar classical portrait, tests our conscious understanding of the color. Once used to signify aristocracy, here a splash of paint contradicts the figurative details and creates a new, deconstructing, meaning.
