Spray paint & Acrylic on Persian Carpet

60 x 79 inches

NAHRIN created by Mateo, is part of COPE NYC's exhibition, "Blue," the first curated exhibition in 630 Flushing's South Lobby Gallery curated by Vida Sabbaghi.

Mateo’s use of Persian rugs has an old-world feel with its distinctive and decorative sophistication. The blue used in the work, Nahrin, has intricate designs and symbols that bring the portrait alive and compliment the painted face adorned with jewelry and stylized makeup.

The art of Mateo is at the frontier of Urban art & Ancient cultures.

Questioning the perception of traditional craft in our contemporary societies.

Mateo is best known for his baroque street art inspired by ornaments from around the world, as well as for his striking oriental carpet paintings, resulting in a mix of urban art with the heritage of ancient cultures.

His signature painted rugs feature striking feminine portraits adorned with ancient patterns, forcing us to question our cultural identity.
