Windy Clouds and Moonlight Shining On Dew (Fuungetsuro)

2020

Natural indigo & micronized pure silver on Kozo paper

39 x 39 in

Windy Clouds and Moonlight Shining On Dew (Fuungetsuro)” created by Miya Ando is part of COPE NYC’s exhibition, “Blue,” the first curated exhibition in 630 Flushing’s South Lobby Gallery curated by Vida Sabbaghi.

Ando’s signature moon portraits are based on her observations of the night sky. What began as a Covid project in 2020, for which she observed and drew the phases of the moon over 905 nights, eventually became the subject of a solo exhibition at the Bolinas Museum of Art in California earlier this year. To produce these works, Ando uses natural indigo dye on traditional Japanese Kozo paper. In contrast to the softness of the paper, she introduces an element of metal to these intricate works, employing pure silver dust to evoke rivers of shimmering stars. The moon drawings expand on the artist’s ongoing investigation into concepts of time. Each is complex and unique.
